A Redoute is a version of traditional masquerade ball, primarily in Vienna, where women are in charge. They are required to wear masks, and they have the exclusive right to ask the men to dance. Historically, this suspended the usual strict social protocols where men initiated the dance. Near midnight, the Demaskierung (unmasking) occurs, where the women remove their masks, potentially removing some of their power as well.
