Long ago, before the Chinook were real people, there was a village in the Columbia River Gorge. Coyote came down the river and asked the villagers if they were living well. “Yes, we are, but you should talk to our chief, Tsagaglalal, up on the hill.” So, Coyote pranced up the hill to ask if she was a good chief or one of those evildoers. She said, “My people live well. We have plenty of food, good houses. Why do you ask?” Coyote said, “Changes are coming. How will you care for your people then?” She didn’t know. And so Coyote changed her into a rock to watch over her people forever.
