Pareidolia
Malini: Administrative Coordinator - CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital
John: Scientist - Phoenix NMR
The tendency to perceive a meaningful image in a random or ambiguous pattern is pareidolia. Such is the case with heikegani, a species of crab native to Japan with a pattern on its shell resembling an angry samurai. According to legend, these samurai crabs were spared from being eaten and thrown back into the sea out of respect for their resemblance to the Heike warriors. This act of reverence allowed the crabs to reproduce and thrive, ensuring their survival.
Often, we move through life unaware of the lasting impact our actions can have on others. This piece, a collaborative effort featuring the legs of the samurai crab forged and sculpted from rebar by John Stringer, symbolizes the profound influence of time and change, illustrating how small acts can create beautiful and enduring transformations.
