Years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Ben and Linda Marra, Seattle, Washington photographers who 20 years traveling to pow-wows, setting up their mobile studio, and photographing the dancers in their finest regalia. All film, no digital. Their stunning book, "Faces from the Land," was the inspiration for my mask. Their portraits and accompanying narrative have captured the essence of a pow-wow, all the majesty and individuality of each dancer. My mask is the face of Travis Bear Ike, Nonka Gthezhe, Spotted Back. If you have never been to a pow-wow or experienced the emotional Grand Entry, I highly recommend the experience. Hearing the drummers beat into your soul and watching the dancers hold tradition close to their hearts reminds us that, indeed, We Are All Related.
